The Rifleman aired on CBS from 1958 to 1963 the show is considered a western, though I'm sure that's likely quite apparent. The main character was Lucas McCain a widowed father to Mark who is a very accomplished gunfighter with a modified Winchester rifle that could fire rapid rounds. Lucas tries his best to do right by others, protect and raise Mark to be a respectable young man. A fighter in justice especially after his wife was killed. He is good friends with the town Marshal Micah Torrance, recovering (and sometimes still struggling) alcoholic who sometimes needs an extra hand taking care of rift raft that come to their town of North Fork, New Mexico. Lucas never has any trouble in doing so. Lucas's trigger, the one thing guaranteed to set him off is if Mark is threatened or God have mercy on your soul, harmed. Mark idolizes his father and wants to be just like him, but at times struggles with wanting to be his own person with thoughts and ideals that don't always match his pa's.

Throughout the run there were three female characters each in their own ways serving as the mother/grandmother, affection and romance side. The first was Hattie Denton, the eldest of the three she always made sure the McCain guys were eating healthy, safe and was a general mother hen. After her came Milly Scott who did the same exact thing, just this time the character was far younger and there was some PG or rated G flirting and hidden substance between her and Lucas. I really haven't seen many episodes with Milly so I can't speak in more detail of her. Finally the character of Lou Mallory was introduced. This time a head strong Irish woman who owned the General Store, the local hotel and several parcels of land. Which for a show that took place in the 1880's was quite remarkable. There was also flirting of sort between her and Lucas. It should be mentioned none the ladies were on the program at the same time.

It was announced that CBS has a plan for a remake. "One of the hottest development trends at the networks this year is the revival of the western, and now CBS is jumping on the (trail) wagon in a big way: The Eye is teaming with Harry Potter director Chris Columbus to bring back ABC's late 1950s Chuck Connors oater The Rifleman. Laeta Kalogridis, the Avatar and Shutter Island scribe who previously oversaw NBC's failed reboot of The Bionic Woman, is partnering with Drive Angry writer/director Patrick Lussier to pen a pilot script for the project, with Columbus....." you can read the entire article here
I am torn on this. Apart of me would love to see this show with a better budget, more polished, plus cowboys are hot! But I don't want the remake to blur the lines of reality of life in the West for a good and moral Christian man with what sells in Hollywood - sex. I decided to come up with what I considered to be a possible cast for the remake.
